LAWRENCE, MA (April 10, 2009) – On Tuesday, April 21st the Groundwork Lawrence Green Team kicked off it’s "Green it Up Lawrence!" campaign in honor of Earth Day with a neighborhood clean-up of several blocks surrounding the North Common.

The Green Team, Groundwork Lawrence's year-round environmental leadership program comprised of 10 teens, led 70 Lawrence youth and other community members in picking up trash from streets within a five block radius of the North Common. Volunteers helped to collect 100 bags of trash and 200 gallons of recyclables.

The Green Team began the "Green It Up Lawrence!" campaign as a way to address what it considers to be a major issue affecting quality of life in Lawrence: the litter and trash that lines many of the city’s streets. Through its Earth Day clean-up and other ongoing outreach and events, the Green Team hopes to bring attention to the issue by encouraging every city resident-- both homeowners and renters-- to take pride in their community and do their part to keep Lawrence’s streets tidy.

Lawrence neighborhood associations, concerned citizens, and local businesses are encouraged to join the Green Team’s "Green It Up Lawrence!" campaign by hosting clean-ups on their own streets.

Green Team 2008

The Green Team encourages all community members to treat each day as if it’s Earth Day. You can support Green Team’s efforts by supporting regular community clean-ups utilizing existing City services of trash pick-up on Tuesdays to "Green It Up Lawrence!" and help keep Lawrence clean.
