Every Farmers Market has its heartbeat, and for us, one of those heartbeats is Gary Wilkins of Riverdale Farm. When you meet Gary, you instantly feel the passion he carries for farming and for the community he calls his “adopted home”—Lawrence.
Gary grew up on a farm, working alongside his father. Farming has always been a family matter, something rooted in tradition and love. His father began selling produce in Lawrence back in 1988, and since then, the Wilkins family has been part of the city’s story of fresh food access.
“I love my job every day,” Gary says—and it’s not hard to believe. You can see it in every crate of vegetables and every tray of plants he brings to our markets. Riverdale Farm is more than a business; it’s a tribute. The name itself comes from two inspirations: River, for the farm’s location near the water, and Dale, in honor of Gary’s late brother. It’s a way of remembering family, while feeding families here in Lawrence.
Gary doesn’t do this work alone. With the support of María Natera, our Healthy Living Programs Manager, and Manolo, who helps move the harvest to the markets, Gary knows exactly what neighbors are looking for season after season. As he puts it, “Everything I grow is based on Lawrence.” That commitment is why his produce always feels like it belongs here—it’s grown with us in mind.
Looking ahead, Gary sees Riverdale Farm growing right alongside our Farmers Markets. His vision is full of possibility: more variety, more connections, and more ways to strengthen food security in Lawrence.
For us, this partnership is what community looks like. Fresh food, grown with love, shared with neighbors, and rooted in a vision of health and belonging. We are grateful for Gary—and for all our vendors—who turn every market day into a celebration of nourishment and connection.
