Who Knew? - Lawrence's Urban Wilds

After a few damp and dreary days, Lawrence awoke to bright sunshine and blue skies this morning. With autumn in full swing and winter only a few short weeks away now is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the crisp air, changing leaves, and blue skies. Walking through Lawrence along the Spicket River can really make you forget that you are in a city of more than 75,000 people, the resilience of nature is quickly apparent as you explore this active ecosystem in the midst of urban sprawl.

Bringing New Life to Lawrence's Gateway - The Oxford Mill

For more than two decades the City of Lawrence has been working alongside a number of other partners to rehabilitate the former Oxford Paper Mill. Paper production began at the mill in 1846 and was the first of its kind in Lawrence. The site once employed as many as 500 people and produced the glossy paper National Geographic Magazine was printed on. In 1975 the abandoned mill suffered two major fires, local residents began to call it “the Dresden of Lawrence” because of its likeness to the German city after World War II.

GWL is hiring for Green Team! Applications due Friday, September 14th at 5:00pm!

Groundwork Lawrence (GWL) is accepting applications for Green Team Members. The Green Team school year employment program offers part-time paid positions for high school students, from Lawrence, MA to help lead and learn about local environmental and health issues, conduct research, raise awareness, challenge their peers to do community service, and participate in hands-on improvement projects throughout the City of Lawrence. Green Team members will work about 20 hours per month during the school year through a combination of after school and weekend work.

GWL is hiring an Education Program Coordinator

GWL is seeking an Educational Program Coordinator to implement a variety of youth education programs. Reporting to the Program Director, this position manages 10-20 youth employees, works with the Mass Audubon Environmental Education Coordinator, AmeriCorps Service Learning Coordinator, and temporary summer staff to deliver top quality environmental and public health youth programming and to integrate youth into GWL’s community activities and events.

Stop by the Wednesday market August 22nd on Appleton Way between 9 am and 2 pm, or come by on Saturday the 25th at 216 Lawrence Street!

Senior Farmers Market Coupons to be Distributed August 1st!

"Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, Inc. and Lawrence Senior Center will be hosting distribution of the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutritional Program coupons on Wednesday, August 1st at 8:00am – 11:00am, located at 155 Haverhill Street, Lawrence. It will be first come, first serve for eligible seniors. Lawrence elder residents 60 are encouraged to attend the Lawrence distribution site.
